Elk Country RV Resort Review: Trinidad, California
We stayed at Elk Country RV Resort in Trinidad, California, for one week in mid-April while exploring Redwood National and State Parks.
We paid about $400 for the week for a spacious 50-amp full-hookup site in the meadow area. Overall, it was a great fit for us because it was quiet, practical and incredibly close to the Redwoods.

Our Site
Our site was in the meadow section and gave us plenty of room for our fifth wheel and F-350 dually.
We had 50-amp power, water and sewer, and we don’t remember having any issues with the utilities.
Because we visited in April, the campground also wasn’t very crowded, which made the whole stay feel peaceful.
Yes, There Are Really Elk Everywhere
Elk Country definitely lives up to its name.
Elk regularly wandered through the meadow and could be right outside your RV. It was one of the coolest parts of staying here.
The obvious downside is that a meadow full of elk also means plenty of elk poop.
It wasn’t bad enough to bother us, but you definitely had to watch where you stepped.
For us, it was worth it.
Location
The biggest reason I would stay here again is the location.
We were only about 15 minutes from the Prairie Creek area, which put us close to Fern Canyon, Trillium Falls, Big Tree and Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway.
The northern areas around Jedediah Smith were farther away, closer to 45 minutes to an hour, which is one reason we never made it that far north.
Eureka was also around a 30-minute drive, so grocery runs and errands were easy enough.
For exploring the southern and central parts of Redwood National and State Parks, I thought Elk Country was a great base.
Internet and Cell Service
I don’t remember us having any major internet or cell-service issues at the campground.
Since Eli works remotely, bad connectivity usually stands out in my memory, and nothing about this stay does.
That said, I wouldn’t use our memory as a guarantee if internet is critical for your stay.
Amenities
The campground had bathrooms and other facilities, but we didn’t use them.
We had full hookups and our own bathroom and shower, so I can’t fairly review the campground facilities.
This also wasn’t a campground we chose for amenities.
We wanted a large site, full hookups and an excellent location for exploring the Redwoods, and that’s what we got.
The Staff
One thing that really stood out happened after we left.
I had a package delivered to the campground that arrived after we had already moved on.
The staff were kind enough to ship it to our next location for us.
When you’re traveling full-time, something that simple can save a huge headache, and I really appreciated how helpful they were.
Would We Stay Again?
Yes.
Elk Country was quiet, spacious, reasonably priced during our stay and extremely convenient for exploring one of our favorite parts of California.
The elk wandering around the campground made it even more memorable.
If we returned to Trinidad or Prairie Creek, I would absolutely stay here again.
